Say where you are from in German

Learn Ich komme aus Indien and Woher kommst du with English explanations, German audio and three short A1 practice checks.

Lesson 2 of 3. Say which country you are from and ask the same question.

Start with the meaning

Add one more useful sentence: Ich komme aus Indien means “I am from India”. Ich komme aus … gives your country of origin. It does not tell someone where you live now.

Ich komme aus Indien.

I am from India.

Ich komme aus Deutschland.

I am from Germany.

Woher kommst du?

Where are you from?

Country names and a small verb change

Indien is India; Deutschland is Germany. Aus means “from” in these sentences. Use ich komme when speaking about yourself and du kommst when asking one person informally. Woher asks about origin.
