Introduce yourself in German

Learn Hallo, Ich heiße and Wie heißt du with English explanations, German audio and three short A1 practice checks.

Lesson 1 of 3. Say hello, give your name and ask someone their name.

Start with the meaning

Start with a sentence you can use straight away. Ich means “I”. Ich heiße Asha means “My name is Asha”. Replace Asha with your own name; the rest stays the same.

Ich heiße Asha.

My name is Asha.

Ich heiße Alex.

My name is Alex.

Hallo! Ich heiße Lena. Wie heißt du?

Hello! My name is Lena. What is your name?

A friendly first conversation

Hallo means “hello”. Wie heißt du? asks “What is your name?” when speaking informally to one person. Notice heiße after ich, but heißt after du. The letter ß sounds like “ss”.

Try it yourself

Choose an answer to see an explanation. You can try again after a mistake.

1. What does “Ich heiße Asha” mean?

3. Someone asks “Wie heißt du?” Choose a reply that gives your name.

Show the answer and explanation

Ich heiße Asha.

Say it aloud or write it on paper. This activity does not record or assess your voice.
