Describe experience, explain strengths and ask about a fictional role.

Use formal Sie with the interviewer.

Choose a fictional work history. Practise giving reasons and asking questions; no personal information or real application is sent.

This is a fictional practice situation. The dialogue below follows one example path; interactive practice lets you choose other meanings, complete the grammar and listen to German audio.

Explain what you had done before applying.

Interviewer

Welche Erfahrungen bringen Sie für diese Stelle mit?

What experience do you bring to this position?

One possible reply

Bevor ich mich beworben habe, hatte ich zwei Jahre in einem Geschäft gearbeitet.

Use hatte plus Partizip II for the work completed before the later application. The earlier action takes the same auxiliary as in Perfekt.

Explain a strength and give a reason.

Interviewer

Was können Sie besonders gut?

What are you particularly good at?

One possible reply

Ich arbeite gern mit Menschen, weil ich gut zuhöre.

Weil introduces a reason and puts the finite verb at the end. Choose the clause that keeps that order.

Describe someone you worked with.

Interviewer

Können Sie ein Beispiel für gute Zusammenarbeit nennen?

Can you give an example of good teamwork?

One possible reply

Ich hatte eine Kollegin, mit der ich Probleme besprechen konnte.

Mit takes dative. In a relative clause use der for a feminine colleague and dem for a masculine colleague or neuter team. The finite verb stays last.

Interviewer

Was würden Sie bei uns gern machen?

What would you like to do here?

One possible reply

Ich würde gern neue Aufgaben übernehmen.

Use Konjunktiv II for an imagined situation: würde plus infinitive, wäre for be, or hätte for have.

Explain the purpose of a question.

Interviewer

Warum ist Ihnen die Einarbeitung wichtig?

Why is the induction period important to you?

One possible reply

Ich möchte gut eingearbeitet werden, um Fehler zu vermeiden.

Use um with a zu-infinitive when the subject is shared. Use damit for a finite purpose clause with its own subject.

Ask a polite question about the role.

Interviewer

Welche Fragen haben Sie an uns?

What questions do you have for us?

One possible reply

Könnten Sie mir sagen, wann die Arbeit beginnt?

An indirect question puts the finite verb last. Use ob for a yes/no question; use a W-word for a question about time or organisation.
