# DeutschLearner dictionary sources and reuse

The dictionary's inflection tables and adapted English meanings are derived from
**English Wiktionary contributors**, extracted by Tatu Ylonen's
[Kaikki / Wiktextract](https://kaikki.org/dictionary/German/).
Each word page links to its Wiktionary entry; the entry's history records its
contributors. Dictionary content is available under
[Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/).

The selected source snapshot and per-entry fingerprints are recorded in
`content/dictionary/entries.json` in the source repository. The normalized
snapshot is generated by `scripts/import-dictionary.py`. Ordinary builds use
that checked-in snapshot and do not fetch external dictionary services.

Changes: selected 1,000 nouns and 250 verbs; retained separate noun etymologies and
meaning-dependent paradigms; normalized article/case labels; omitted qualified,
nonstandard and historical dative-e variants; selected ordinary modern forms for
Frau, Mann, Schuh, Plan and Party where the extraction leaves historical,
measurement or spelling variants unqualified (additional reference links are
recorded on those pages); selected documented verb auxiliaries
for the displayed use; distinguished standalone modal participles from the
double-infinitive construction; added reflexive pronouns. Simple Konjunktiv II
tables can include source forms marked literary or formal; the reference explains
that these may be replaced by würde + infinitive in ordinary usage.

Example sentences, German explanations and interface copy are original
DeutschLearner material. Dictionary examples and adapted dictionary content are
included under CC BY-SA 4.0. No third-party example quotations or recordings were
imported. General site code retains its existing licensing treatment.

Bundled pronunciation clips are reused from the existing vocabulary audio bank;
they are synthetic recordings of the headword, including the article for nouns.
Where a clip is unavailable, the browser's German speech synthesis is used if
supported. See [vocabulary sources and audio details](/VOCABULARY-LICENSE.md).

This is a selected learner reference, not an exhaustive dictionary. Regional,
historical and specialist usages may differ. English and German page versions
share the same German forms and use separately localized explanations.
